Matrix Stepped Layout can't be turned off

Hello,

I do not see an option to disable the stepped layout setting in a matrix. I do not see this option in neither Layout settings nor Row headers settings. If I have the format as tabular and +/- icons disabled, the view is still not tabular.

My PBI version: Version: 2.156.951.0 64-bit (July 2026)

Hello, sorry for the late response. Unfortunately, this does not work. However, I have managed to transform the data so that I can use a table, not a matrix in pbi. Thank you for your time.

  • Hi adamkelbl -Look for a "Layout and style presets" card near the top of the pane — it should be above or near your "Layout" section (the one showing "Column width" / "Matrix layout" in your screenshot). Inside that preset dropdown, you should see options resembling Compact / Outline / Tabular — pick the one that gives you the flat, non-indented look (likely "Outline" or an explicit "Tabular" preset, separate from the "Layout: Tabular" dropdown you already have set under Matrix layout).

Hi, thank you for your help. Unfortunately, I do not have a "Layout and style presets" section. Only a "Style presets" and "Layout" sections. Under "Layout" I have the option to choose tabular view, however, it does not do anything.

    Hi adamkelbl ,

sorry for the delay in response!!

The Stepped layout setting is no longer exposed as a separate option in the Matrix formatting pane. The current Matrix visual uses Format -> Layout -> Matrix layout -> Layout, where you can choose Compact, Outline, or Tabular.

For a true tabular appearance, select Tabular. Microsoft describes Tabular as displaying each level of the row hierarchy in its own column without indentation.

If Tabular is selected but the visual still appears stepped/indented, first verify that you have multiple fields in the Rows well, since the tabular layout affects how hierarchy levels are displayed. For example, with Year and Quarter in Rows, the levels should appear as separate columns.

Also note that disabling the +/- icons only removes the expand/collapse controls; it does not change the matrix layout. Microsoft documents expand/collapse separately from the Matrix layout setting.

If multiple row fields are present and Tabular still has no effect, I recommend creating a new Matrix visual with the same fields and setting it to Tabular.

    Thanks!!

you can try to set the layout to Tabular and disable repeat row headers and turn off  +/- icons

The best way is to upgrade the pbi version and you can see layout and style presents
