How to make two filters using the same column?

I want to make a dashboard where my user can select two different quarters and each one of them will filter only some of the visuals. The problem is, I need to use the same date column for both. Is there a way to do this? Or is there an alternative solution?
(consider I have a calendar table with date column and a quarter/year column)

Thank you!

  • Hi EugenioProlog,
You can use the same date field in both slicers and then set appropriate edit interaction.

Click on the slicer, click on Format and then click on Edit Interaction. For the visuals that need filtering, click on filter or highlight on other visual. For the visuals that don't need filtering, click on None on the other visual.

Do the same for 2nd date slicer as well.

  • Edit Interaction should fix this if you do not have requirements of separate effects of the two filters

Otherwise, create a calculated table that duplicates your existing Date Table

    Date 2 = 'Date'

And connect one Date table to each fact table, so you have slicers filtering colums of two different tables

  • Yes, this is 100% possible, but not with a single Date table.

To allow your user to select two different quarters independently, you must use two separate date dimension tables, both pointing to the same fact table.

    Create Duplicate Date Tables.

Since a single Date table cannot have two different filter contexts at the same time,

you need to create two role-playing Date tables:

    Table Name           Purpose

    Calendar_Q1         Slicer for Trimester 1

    Calendar_Q2         Slicer for Trimester 2

Both tables are duplicates of your existing Calendar table.

  • I've done this before by creating a disconnected (no relationships) calendar table and then creating measures or calculation groups based on the fields from that. I used the same calendar table query to create both tables but this will allow you to create measures that measure different time frames for the same measure types.
