Error when adding Power BI tab in Ms Teams
I keep getting error "Unable to save Power BI tab configuration" since early of this week, there are other existing tab in the group chat which are accessible. But I cannot add new Power BI tab, does anyone have idea how to resolve this?
The same error appears in both Ms Teams app and web browser @ https://teams.microsoft.com/
The fact that:
Existing Power BI tabs continue to work
The issue started only this week
It occurs in both the Teams desktop app and Teams web
The error is "Unable to save Power BI tab configuration"
suggests this is less likely to be a client-side issue and more likely related to Microsoft Teams, Power BI Service, or tenant configuration.
Here are a few things to check:
1. Verify Power BI permissions
Ensure you still have:
Access to the report/dashboard.
Access to the workspace where it's published.
The required Power BI license (Pro or Premium Per User, if applicable).
2. Check Teams app permissions
Ask your Microsoft 365 administrator to verify that:
The Power BI app is enabled in Teams.
App permission policies haven't changed recently.
App setup policies are not preventing users from adding new Power BI tabs.
3. Try adding a different report
Attempt to add:
A report from another workspace.
A different dashboard.
If all reports fail, the issue is likely with the Teams integration rather than a specific report.
4. Check for recent tenant or Conditional Access changes
If your organization recently updated:
Microsoft Entra ID Conditional Access policies.
Teams app policies.
Power BI tenant settings.
they could prevent new tab configurations while allowing existing ones to continue working.
5. Review Microsoft 365 service health
Since the issue began recently and affects both the desktop and web versions of Teams, ask your administrator to check the Microsoft 365 Admin Center → Health → Service health for any active advisories related to:
Microsoft Teams
Power BI
Microsoft 365 Apps
6. Test in another Team or Chat
Try adding the same Power BI tab to:
A different Team.
A different channel.
Another group chat.
This can help determine whether the issue is specific to one chat/channel or tenant-wide.
If none of the above resolves the issue, I'd recommend opening a Microsoft support ticket and including:
The exact timestamp of the failure.
The Teams URL.
The Power BI report URL.
A screenshot of the error.
Correlation/Activity IDs from the browser developer tools (if available).

Hi krishnakanth240 , the issue remains after suggested attempt. I published the reports to workspace, and for sure having access to it too. The weird thing here is when I try to add Power BI app, there is no workspace dialog or reports listed for selection. Only 2 buttons available: Back and Save. I recalled there should be a list of workspaces prompted for selection.

Hi kennykhor
Try clearing your browser cache and cookies for teams.microsoft.com, try using a incognito window and attempt the tab again. If that does not help then sign out of Teams completely on both desktop and web and sign back in. Also try testing with a different browser and network connection.
If none of that resolves then confirm you have access permissions to specific Power BI report in workspace you are adding, not just the Teams channel itself and check Power BI service page for any ongoing outages

Hi kennykhor
Usually this is a Teams cache / auth token problem. Remove the tab, sign out of Teams and Power BI, clear the Teams cache or use InPrivate, then sign back in and add the tab again. Also double-check you still have Build permission on the dataset and edit access to the channel. That normally fixes the “Unable to save Power BI tab configuration” errorTry this fix in order:
- Remove the Power BI tab from the chat/channel.
- Sign out of Teams and also open Power BI in the browser and sign out there.
- Clear the Teams cache
- Or, quicker: try adding the tab from a private/incognito window first.
- Sign back in
- Add the Power BI tab again using the report link.
If it still fails:
- Make sure you have Build permission on the dataset and edit access to the channel/chat.
- Confirm the report is in the same tenant and not blocked by a workspace/capacity permission change.
- Try adding the tab from the Power BI web link instead of searching inside Teams.
