Data labels overlap in Bar Chart
My data labels are overlapping with bars in bar chart as shown below, how to correct it? i tried positioning then as both Auto or Outer end however it gives sames result
In Power BI, try these steps to fix overlapping data labels:
1. Format visual → Data labels: Set the position to Outside end.
2. Reduce text size: Try 8–10 pt.
3. Increase chart size: Make the visual wider or taller.
4. Adjust display units: Use Thousands (K) or Millions (M) to shorten labels.
5. Check bar spacing: Under Bars → Inner padding, adjust the spacing between bars.
Note
If labels still overlap: Reduce the number of categories displayed or use a tooltip to show detailed values

you can try to set up the background color for the value. Then the value will be clear to see.

Hi powerbiexpert22,
This looks more like a spacing/layout issue than a problem with the measure itself.
With clustered columns, Power BI still makes automatic decisions about label placement, so setting Position to Auto or Outer end does not always prevent labels from getting too close when the series have similar values.
I would first try increasing the Space between series setting under the column layout options. Microsoft documents this under the bar and column chart spacing settings.
I would also try:
- increasing the width of the visual;
- reducing the data-label text size slightly;
- keeping Optimize label display enabled;
- if per-series label formatting is available in your visual, placing one series inside end and another outside end.
The main limitation is that Power BI does not provide a guaranteed “no overlap” setting for native column-chart labels. If the values are very close and the plot area is narrow, the visual can still place the labels near each other.
So I would start with Space between series and a slightly wider visual before changing the chart type.

Hi powerbiexpert22,
If Auto and Outside end are giving the same result, try these adjustments:
- Increase the width of the visual.
- Reduce the data-label text size slightly.
- Go to Format visual → Bars/Columns → Layout and increase the spacing between the series/categories.
- If possible, shorten the labels by using display units such as Thousands (K) or Millions (M).
- If you have multiple series, try formatting the series separately and use different label positions where available.
Other option to consider if this doesn't help:
First increase the visual size and the Space between series/categories setting. If there are many categories, consider showing fewer categories or putting the detailed values in a tooltip instead.
