Creating a bookmark with long text strings
Hi,
I wish to use a bookmark in the form of a matrix or table to show two columns, one being a note index and the other being a text note. The notes are quite long and i'd want to set the column width if possible so that there is a neat output rather than an extremely long column covering much of the page.
Can anyone advise the best way to do this ?
thanks
Scott
Hi Scott,
Totally doable — here is the setup that works cleanly:
1. Create your Notes table Two columns: Note Index (integer) and Text Note (text). You can use a simple M query or a calculated table — no DAX measures needed.
2. Add a Table visual
- Drop in both columns: Note Index and Text Note
- Format > Values > Word Wrap → On
- Drag the Text Note column edge to the width you want — this is the only way to control column width in a standard table. You cannot type in an exact pixel value, but the dragged width saves and persists reliably
3. Show/hide with bookmarks
- Create two rectangle shape buttons labelled "Notes"
- Set up two bookmarks:
- Bookmark 1: table visible, Button A visible, Button B hidden
- Bookmark 2: table hidden, Button B visible, Button A hidden
- Link each button to its bookmark via Format > Action > Type: Bookmark
Clicking the button toggles the table in and out as a side panel. The two-bookmark swap is the standard pattern for this.
The output is neat and readable — it is just manual rather than formula-driven, but it works well once set up.

Power BI matrix doesn’t let you fix column width by a number, and a bookmark just keeps whatever layout you set by hand, so for long notes I use a text box with wrap and a fixed size, or turn Auto-size column width off on the matrix, drag the note column to a good width, then save that view as a bookmark.

Hello PaisleyPrince ,
You can now set width for table and matrix visual ( June 2026 onward) , just go to formatting and type width, it will show option to set width, set as per need and you are done. You can also set width for individual columns.
I hope this helps.
Did I answer your query ? Mark this as solution if this helps, Kudos are appreciated.
Cheers.
