Connect remotely to hosted SQL Server

HI,

 

Can Power BI Desktop (Free) connect to a remotely hosted SQL Server?

 

Ex: I have an SQL Server 2012 DB hosted on DiscountASp.net, they allow remote connection, would I be able to connect to it and would the data on my dashboard be refreshed automatically as the data in the DB changes?

    Hi d_u,


    I am not familiar with DiscountASp.net SQL Server database. Is it a cloud database like Amazon Redshift database? If that is the case, I am afraid that you are not able to connect to the DiscountASp.net SQL database from Power BI Desktop.

    You can connect to these databases such as MySQL Database, Teradata Database, Amazon Redshift database and so on in Power BI Desktop.

      Hi Lydia,

       Thank You for answering, in the preview feature of PBI Desktop there is a connector for Amazon Redshift, AspDiscount.net allow remote SSMS connections to SQL server, I read somewhere that if you can connect with SSMS you can connect also with PBI desktop.

        Hi d_u,

        I note that there is no connector for AspDiscount.net in Power BI Desktop. I am afraid that you will get error when connecting to AspDiscount.net database from Desktop, have you tried connecting to the database from Desktop to verify it?
