Power BI embedded reports for many customers: how do you roll out report changes safely?

Hi everyone,

We embed the same set of reports for dozens of customers, with each customer in its own workspace created from a template. When we change the template report we want to roll it out in stages, not all at once.

Our current idea is to script the rollout with the REST API, roughly like this:

for ws in customer_workspaces:
    # 1. clone or update the report from the template
    update_report_content(ws.id, report_id, template_report_id)
    # 2. rebind to the customer semantic model
    rebind_report(ws.id, report_id, ws.dataset_id)
    # 3. smoke test, then continue or stop
    if not smoke_test(ws.id, report_id):
        break

What I would like to learn

  • How do you stage the rollout (a pilot group of customers first, rings, or a percentage)?
  • What does your smoke test check after an update: that the report loads, that a key query returns data, or something more?
  • How do you roll back when a release breaks one customer, given that the report content has already been overwritten?

If you use deployment pipelines or Git for this instead of scripts, I would like to hear what worked and what did not. Thanks!
