Is it possible to change a datasource type with parameters?

Hello,

I saw that by using parameters it was possible to update the server and database name, simplifying the change of a datasource for a specific report. I was wondering though, are there limitations to it documented somewhere? Or it is possible to use the parameters to connect either to a SQl server instance and oracle instance as well, and other datasources types?
