Donut Chart Not Visually Highlighting GTM on Territory Selection

Hi all,

I’m building a Power BI dashboard with two visuals:

  • A bar/line chart for Profitability Analysis by Territory

  • A donut chart for Revenue Contribution per GTM

The donut chart is receiving the correct filtered data when I select a territory from the bar chart — I’ve confirmed the values update correctly. However, some of GTM segments in the donut chart are not visually highlighted (i.e., no segment emphasis or animation).

This behavior is inconsistent:

  • For some territories, the donut chart highlights the GTM segments as expected.

  • For others, the data updates but no visual highlight appears.

-Why might the donut chart skip visual highlighting even when data is filtered?
-
Are there known limitations with donut chart interactivity?

  • Hi PatrickTL ,

Based on your description, this behavior typically results from how Power BI manages cross-highlighting in donut charts, rather than an issue with the underlying data. When a selection leaves only one visible segment, the donut chart updates but cannot visually emphasize the highlight, making it seem as if nothing has changed.

Additionally, if the interaction between visuals is set to filter instead of highlight, the donut will refresh but not display the usual shading or emphasis. I recommend opening Edit Interactions in the toolbar, selecting the donut chart, and ensuring highlight mode is enabled. Also, consider that manual color settings or similar palette choices can make highlights less noticeable, as donut charts dim non-selected slices subtly.

If a bar chart shows clearer highlights with the same data, this confirms the donut chart's limitations. If the issue persists after checking interaction mode, data distribution, and color settings, try recreating the visuals on a new page without bookmarks, layers, or custom visuals.
