Develop and maintain Power BI datasets using VS ext Microsoft Analysis Services Projects

Is the preferred tool to maintain and develop PowerBI  dataset using Visualstudio ext. Microsoft Analysis Services Projects? We are trying to achieve more control over the PowerBi dataset in the organization and a possible path is using  Visual studio and ta source control tool(GIT) to track changes and deploy det data sets to a Power BI workspace where the XMLA end point has read/write property of the Premium capacity enabled. The PowerBI report developers then connects to the deployed power BI dataset rather than directly to a database.
