Measure comparison to BLANK

I was testing the value of a measure in DAX as follows:

 

IF ( [My Measure] <> BLANK(), ABC, DEF )

 

The expectation was that the else part of the IF condition should be executed when [My Measure] is BLANK. For some reason this did not work and the following DAX statement works .

 

IF ( NOT ( ISBLANK ( [My Measure] ) ), ABC, DEF )

 

Any idea why this is happening ?

    That's because "... = BLANK()" is not equivalent to the function "ISBLANK(...)". BLANKS in DAX are also equal to 0 or "" (an empty string). If you want to compare strictly to BLANK, you have to use "==". So, ISBLANK( [M] ) will be logically equivalent to "[M] == BLANK()".
