XMLA Read Operation Capacity Spkie
I've seen quite a few posts from people seeing spikes when connecting to a semantic model via excel - we have a number of power users who can do this and I do see this happening - in some cases it can eat up to 50% of our F64 which is nuts - it happens randomly and I can't seem to replicate by doing exactly what they are. One of the users shared their screen with me and their laptop was out of memory and paging - it only had 8 GB RAM - I can inderstand how that have consequences on their local machine but is there any way that would affect the % of base capacity used by interactive operations as well ? clutching at straws 🤣
thanks in adance folks!
Hi StitoTheGreat ,
Excel doesn't cache results like Power Bl, so every pivot or refresh triggers a fresh query to your capacity.
If the user's machine is low on RAM, it can cause retries or inefficient queries that spike CU usage.
Removing Build access disables
Analyze in excel and helps protect capacity from unwanted load.
Or don't provide build access to everyone on semantic model.
Thanks,
Sai Teja

Be aware there is another level to this. Standard "Analyze in Excel" consumes even more CUs as it runs MDX queries rather than DAX queries. Try to guide your users away from full data model connections and towards dedicated DAX based queries.

Also, if you Analyze in Excel users discover cube functions you have truly lost the battle. We had cases where users had 100000 individual cube connections, one per cell.
