Variable Library - "Can't Complete Action"
Hi everyone,
Hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction—this might be something simple that I’ve completely overlooked (wouldn’t be the first time! 😀).
I’m trying to edit a Variable Library, which I’ve done successfully across multiple workspaces before. Everything’s been working fine until today, when I started getting the following error while trying to make edits.
The example above is from a brand-new workspace, but I’ve also tested in existing ones and run into the same issue—even when trying to edit variables that are actively in use. I’ve double-checked the usual suspects—Workspace and Tenant setup, permissions, etc.—and everything appears to be in order.
At this point, I’m scratching my head a bit—open to any ideas or things I might be missing!
Really appreciate any help.
Thanks so much,
D
Been on holiday the past couple of weeks, so just catching up now. Whatever fix Microsoft applied seems to have done the trick — the issue looks resolved on my end.
Appreciate everyone’s input.
Cheers,

Thanks for replying v-karpurapud, rritts Shahid12523 ,
Definitely doesn’t look like a setup issue on our side—seems to be something on the back end.
I’ll look into raising a support ticket and exploring the REST API route, if that’s applicable.
AHHH, it was going so well! 😅 As already mentioned—classic case of diving headfirst into “Preview Features.” Lesson learned!
I’ll update the thread if I find anything useful.
Thanks,
D

Looks like Microsoft fixed it overnight as it's working again today.

Hi Data_Ddraig
Thank you for contacting the Microsoft Fabric Community Forum. The error message “Can’t complete action. Check the technical details for more information and try again” typically indicates a failure in executing the request, often due to a backend service or API issue. Even when workspace permissions appear correct, edits can still fail if there is a mismatch between workspace-level access and tenant-level configurations.
Since Variable Libraries are a preview feature, one common cause is that the tenant setting may have been disabled by your Fabric or Power BI administrator. In such cases, workspace Admins can still view the Variable Library but are unable to make changes. To confirm, ask your Fabric tenant admin to verify the setting under: Admin portal → Tenant settings → Fabric (Data Factory) → Variable library (preview), and ensure it is enabled for your group or organization.
Another important factor to check is whether the workspace is connected to a Git repository. When Git integration is enabled, certain items become read-only in the service, and Variable Libraries fall under this restriction. In such cases, switch the workspace to Live mode to perform edits, and then reconnect Git afterward.

I had this issue about two weeks ago. I had to delete and recreate the variable library using a new name. This was a real pain because I had a lot of variables and 2 variable sets (dev and prd). I had to reenter them one at a time and had to update the references in all of my pipelines. It would be nice if you could access these through JSON so you could cut and paste from a file.
That said, this has completely stopped working for me again as of today. I think it's definitely something on the backend but remember, this is still in preview so I guess we have to live with that instability.

This isn’t your setup — it’s likely a Fabric service bug/regression (others are seeing it too).
Quick checks: try Incognito/different browser, confirm you have Contributor or higher role.
If still failing → it’s on Microsoft’s side. Open a support ticket or wait for their fix.
Temporary workaround: update variables via REST API or recreate the library.
