Unable to activate Microsoft Fabric free trial
Hi everyone,
I'm preparing for the DP-700 exam and having trouble activating the Microsoft Fabric 60-day free trial.
I created a new Entra ID tenant and enabled both "Users can create Fabric items" and "Users can try Microsoft Fabric paid features."
My tenant is in Central US, but I keep receiving the message:
"A Fabric trial isn't available for your account."
I've also confirmed that no trial capacity exists in the admin portal.
Has anyone encountered this issue with a new tenant? Is there a way to resolve it?
Thanks!
As your tenant is newly created, MSFT doesnt allow Fabric trail in newly created tenants. Tenant must be atleast 90 days old for it to be eligible for the trail one

Unfortunately, the only way is for you to activate a 30 day free Azure subscription and create a dedicated fabric capacity to learn out

Hi DataSong74,
NandanHegde is correct, there is a 90 day cooldown after creating a tenant before it can start a Fabric trial, and there is no way around this. THe only way is to wait or get a paid capacity (possibly using credits if you're eligible for them)

Hi DataSong74,
Building on the Azure subscription suggestion above: for DP-700 prep an F2 pay-as-you-go capacity works well, and the main thing is making sure you never leave it running by accident. A few guardrails I would set up on day one:
1. Create the capacity in the tenant home region (Central US in your case), with yourself as capacity admin, then assign your study workspace to it under Workspace settings > License info.
2. Pause and resume from the command line so it takes seconds at the start and end of each session:
SUB=<subscription-id> RG=rg-fabric-study CAP=fabricstudyf2 API=2023-11-01 # start az rest --method post --url "https://management.azure.com/subscriptions/$SUB/resourceGroups/$RG/providers/Microsoft.Fabric/capacities/$CAP/resume?api-version=$API" # stop az rest --method post --url "https://management.azure.com/subscriptions/$SUB/resourceGroups/$RG/providers/Microsoft.Fabric/capacities/$CAP/suspend?api-version=$API"3. Add a safety-net auto-pause, for example a Logic App or Automation runbook on a nightly schedule that calls the same suspend endpoint using a managed identity with Contributor on the capacity. That way a forgotten capacity costs you hours, not days.
4. Set a budget alert in Cost Management on the resource group (for example at 50% and 90% of whatever you are comfortable spending per month).
Two study-specific notes: pausing does not delete your items, so lakehouses, notebooks and pipelines are still there when you resume; and when you pause, any smoothed future usage is settled immediately, so you may see a small charge right at pause time after heavy Spark runs.
So my overall approach would be:
Azure subscription (free credit if eligible) -> F2 capacity in home region, assign study workspace -> resume/suspend via az rest at start/end of each session -> nightly auto-pause + budget alert as safety netsAI-assisted drafting: AI was used to help structure and phrase this response. I reviewed and validated the technical content before posting.
