Pipeline error - Can't access the pipeline

Hello,

Whenever I try to access the pipelines I’m currently working on, I receive the error shown below. These pipelines are still in development, and some activities are deactivated. I usually have access to these pipelines and can work on them; however, as of today, I’m unable to do so. I would greatly appreciate any assistance.

Error: Failed to open resourceCould not load resource 'test pipeline - external file'. Please ensure no mistakes in the JSON and that referenced resources exist. Status: UnknownError, Possible reason: TypeError: Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'referenceName')

  • Hi Jher12,

    Thank you for the update.
    If the pipeline UI is grayed out and you can't access activities, it's likely due to a broken or missing referenceName in the pipeline JSON. This can happen if the JSON has "referenceName": null, "", or points to datasets or linked services that have been renamed or deleted. In these cases, the studio can't display the pipeline and you may see the “Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'referenceName')” error. Since the UI isn't accessible, you should export the pipeline JSON using the REST API or by exporting the ARM template from the Manage section. Then, check for incorrect or missing referenceName fields and update them, or recreate any missing resources with the correct names. After fixing the JSON, publish it back through the REST API, ARM import, or CLI. The pipeline should then open as expected.

    Thank you.

    If the Fabric pipeline UI is gray and won’t open, you can still troubleshoot using the REST API or CLI to list pipelines and view all activities in JSON. Check pipeline run logs for errors and activity details. You can also export the pipeline definition to inspect activities and dependencies offline.

    v-sgandrathi  Thank you for this comment, I was able to pull the json for the pipeline, which allowed me to review the activities and find workspace items that were deleted.

    Additional info: When I try to open the pipeline, I see the following screen.

    It might be your configuration of parameters? ReferenceName

  • Open the pipeline in “View JSON” mode (if accessible)

    Look for any activity that has:

    "referenceName": null

    or

    "referenceName": ""

    These cause the Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'referenceName') error

      I am unable to open the pipeline and view the activities. Whenever I try to open it, an error is returned and the UI appears gray. Is there any other way to troubleshoot this issue since I cannot see the activities?
