Issue with Composite Semantic Model in Microsoft Fabric
Hello Everyone,
I am facing issues with my composit model on Fabric, any help would be appreciated. I have mentioned problem statement below -
Environment:
Platform: Microsoft Fabric / Power BI
Model type: Composite semantic model (local model built on top of a remote/base semantic model via "Add to semantic model" / DirectQuery to Power BI semantic model)
Setup / What I'm trying to do:
I've created a composite semantic model in Fabric that combines three existing semantic models:
1) Mozart
2) SMART
3) BOSS
The intent is to build a single BI report on top of this composite model, pulling tables/relationships from all three source models.
Issue:
When I open the composite semantic model, following error is popping up
"This data source smart is missing credentials. Add the data source credentials by using the dataset setting page"
I checked Data source credentials for SMART, admin has granted access so credentials are not required.
Happy to provide more details if required. Thanks for your support
Things worth checking.
1. Do you have BUILD permissions on SMART?
2. SMART opens without any credential prompt (if you have explicit access).
3. The composite models settings -> Data Source Settings doesn't show " needs attention". (Missing credentials)
4. IF SMART and other models belong to multiple workspaces? Is cross-workspace semantic model sharing enabled?
Not least
5. Power BI /Fabric is cache-hungry, so Republish or recreate the connection to the SMART semantic model if the issue persists.
Between... if you are using desktop Power BI to design the composite model or directly on the Fabric service?
Thankyou Jamunn , tayloramy for Addressing the issue.
Hi Anushree2929 ,
Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Fabric Community Forum, Please go through the following checks and let us know the results.
- Please check if you are able to open the SMART semantic model directly without any errors.
- Verify that you have Build permission on the SMART semantic model, as Viewer access alone is not enough.
- Make sure the owner of the composite semantic model also has the required permissions on all the referenced semantic models.
- Check the Data source credentials for the composite semantic model and, if prompted, sign in again using your Organizational Account.
- Verify that the SMART semantic model refreshes successfully and does not have any credential or gateway issues.
- If possible, remove the SMART semantic model from the composite model and add it again.
- Confirm that the Mozart, SMART, and BOSS semantic models are all in the same Fabric tenant and that you have access to all of them.
- Check the Lineage view to see if there are any broken links or warning icons.
- Try signing out of Fabric, opening it in an InPrivate/Incognito browser window, and signing in again.
- If the SMART semantic model was recently renamed, republished, or moved to another workspace, please recreate the connection in the composite model.
- If the issue still persists, please share the Activity ID, Request ID, Correlation ID, Timestamp (UTC), along with screenshots of the error message and the Data source credentials page so we can investigate further.
Thanks,
Chaithanya.

Hi Anushree2929,
Are the credentials on your composite model set up correctly? You will need credentials to connect to each of the remote models.
Also check that all three remote models have connections set up properly. - JamunnNew Member

Thankyou all for your solution,
The issue got resolved.
In Fabric - Settings < Manage Connections and Gateways, I had to sign in again to make the connection active
