How to test the new map feature?

I have a demo license, I'm learning Fabric, and as a GIS person, I was very happy to hear at FabCon that Fabric supports maps. Unfortunately, I don't think I can test it with the demo version. Is there a way to purchase Fabric privately, just for educational purposes, but with full functionality?

  • I understand your concern about the F-SKU costs, especially when you're learning independently.  For now, using the demo and Power BI Desktop allows you to explore most Fabric features, including limited map visuals.
If you have access to an academic program or community learning initiative, those may offer discounted or free access. It's also helpful to follow Fabric updates, as licensing options could change to better support learners.

In the meantime, community forums, tutorials, and sample datasets are useful resources for practicing and building your skills at no extra cost.

    Hi volfeer ,

Thank you for your interest in learning more about Microsoft Fabric, particularly the mapping features mentioned at FabCon. Currently, Fabric is available through capacity SKUs  rather than as a personal plan. Here’s what that means

    1. The trial or demo version is helpful for learning, but some features, like specific map visuals, require a paid capacity.

    2. There isn’t a standalone private Fabric subscription for individuals at this time.
    FYI:

Here are some options to consider:

Education route: If you’re connected to an educational institution, check if they offer Power BI Premium with academic pricing. When enabled by the tenant admin, this can provide full Fabric features at a reduced cost.

Azure pay‑as‑you‑go: With your own Azure subscription, you can set up an F‑SKU capacity in the Azure portal. This option is billed by the hour and can be used as needed.

Fabric licensing is still developing, so it’s a good idea to monitor the Fabric pricing page and community announcements for updates.

I hope this clarifies your options for accessing the full range of Fabric features.

Hi, yes it did, but you worried me. Unfortunatelly I am private person and even the F1 licence is too expensive just for learning.
