Fabric - Connecting to a Progress (OpenEdge) DB
Hi all,
How should I go about connecting to a Progress Database?
Do I need to have a DSN created and then use that DSN in an ODBC connection?
If so, can you please walk me through the steps?
I'm a seasoned Power BI and new Fabric developer, but struggling to find a way to Integrate Fabric with Progress.

If you want to connect Fabric to a Progress (OpenEdge) DB, it seems using ODBC is feasible. Other connections methods to Progress OpenEdge DB seems not applicable for Fabric.
To connect to ODBC data sources in Fabric, one option is to use the Dataflow Gen2 or the Data pipeline in Fabric's Data Factory. They support the Odbc connector. Let's take Dataflow Gen2 as an example.
- As the Progress (OpenEdge) DB is on-premises, while Fabric is in the cloud, you need to install an on-premises data gateway for using the ODBC connector in Dataflow Gen2.
- Download and install the appropriate ODBC driver for Progress OpenEdge on the machine where the on-premises data gateway is running.
- Create and configure the DSN on the same machine.
- Sign in to the gateway and ensure it is online and connected to your Microsoft Fabric environment.
- Go to Fabric, create a Dataflow Gen2 and connect to the data source through ODBC connector. When creating the connection, select the data gateway you have set up in the previous steps. Reference: Connect to an ODBC data source from Power Query Online

Another option to connect Fabric to ODBC data sources is to use the Notebook. However I haven't figured out how to install or locate the ODBC driver into the Fabric environment. So I couldn't provide detailed suggestions on this. To be honest, I only connected to Azure SQL DB through ODBC with Fabric notebook in the past. But the SQL Server ODBC driver is built-in, so I didn't bother installing it.
