Dataverse Costs - Link to Microsoft Fabric (F&O)
We are currently trying to get data from Finance & Operations (production environment) to Microsoft Fabric.
As recommended by Microsoft, we use the new technology Link to Microsoft Fabric.
During this process the data is acutall NOT stored in OneLake, but instead the data is stored in Dataverse directly.
Also a lakehouse is created which contains shortcuts to the f&o tables in Dataverse.
But this storage mechanism of f&o tables in dataverse raises concerns about potential additional storage costs.
One GB for Database storage costs about 40$/Month... This is significant more than regular OneLake Storage via MS Fabric.
Despite i dont see a direct increase in Database Storage after loading about 100GB of F&O tables via Link to Microsoft Fabric, i am still worried about the potential dataverse storage costs.
Is there a clear statemant about the potential Dataverse costs regarding the Link to Microsoft Fabric Tool from F&O?
Could you provide a reliable statement on this or connect us with the right contact person? Specifically, we need to clarify:
- Are there additional costs for storing F&O tables in Dataverse? If so, how much?
A clear answer on this would be highly valuable for our customers.
Thanks in advance for your support!

Hi Sebastian1998 ,
Thank you nilendraFabric for the helpful response! Thanks for your follow-up question!
When you use Link to Microsoft Fabric with Finance & Operations, here is what happening behind:
-
The actual data stays in F&O’s SQL backend. Fabric creates a shortcut in the Lakehouse, which points to compressed Delta Parquet files, not raw data.
-
These files are stored in Azure Data Lake and count toward Dataverse File capacity, not Database storage.
-
What gets stored in Dataverse is mostly metadata and some compressed files.

If cost is a major concern, Azure Synapse Link might be a more cost-effective alternative for large data volumes:
Azure Synapse Link stores data in Azure Data Lake Storage at a much lower cost (~$26/TB/month compared to ~$40,000/TB/month for Dataverse storage)
With Synapse Link, you can selectively choose which tables to sync, whereas Fabric Link adds all tables by default (though for F&O tables specifically, you can select individual tables)

Hey nilendraFabric,
thank you for your answer.
The big pricing for Database Dataverse Storage is not a problem if only metadata of the f&o tables is stored in dataverse.
Is far as i can see, the dataverse storage is not increasing by much, even though i load more than 100GB in Fabric with Link to MS Fabric.
Is there any trusted sort that describes, what kind of data is stored in dataverse, when i link my f&o tables to fabric with link to fabric?- AnonymousNot applicable

I wish you were right, but the reality is very different I can asure you!
For every table you check mark for either Fabric Link or Azure Synapse link roughly 1/8 of the table size(either Datavese or Finance&Operations)(because of the transformation from SQL RDBM > parquet) is consumed from your Dataverse Database storage. So if you go over your Environment(per user+10Gb) limit, you are billed for 40$/Gb/month(list price)!
In the beginning there was no storage billed in Fabric capacity, but lately I see the same storage calculated there as well. Good thing is that Fabric storage is not so pricy(+-2ct/Gb/month)
