Hi pmscorca ,
Thanks for using Fabric Community.
Fabric doesn't directly map to the concept of dedicated SQL pools found in Azure Synapse Analytics. Here's a breakdown of the key differences:
- Storage: Fabric uses a separate storage layer called OneLake, whereas Synapse relies on Azure Data Lake Storage Gen 2 (ADLSG2) for dedicated SQL pools.
- Compute: Fabric utilizes the Polaris engine for automatic scaling, while Synapse offers dedicated SQL pool options with pre-defined configurations (DWUs).
- Focus: Fabric targets a broader data warehousing approach with features like self-service analytics and workload management. Synapse, with its dedicated SQL pools, caters more to traditional SQL workloads.
However, there is some integration between the two. Fabric's data warehouse component offers functionalities similar to Synapse dedicated pools. You can migrate your existing pools to Fabric, though there might be a need for adjustments due to the architectural differences.
