Unable to open Fabric Data App connected to a semantic model
Hi Community,
I have created and deployed a Data App in Fabric Apps and connected it to an existing Semantic model.
The deployment completes successfully. However, when I select Open from the deployed app page, the app does not load and displays the following message:
"Can’t open this app outside Fabric
Opening apps connected to semantic models outside of the Fabric portal is not supported at this time."
I understand from the message that Fabric Apps connected to semantic models cannot currently be opened in a separate browser window. Microsoft documentation also lists this as a known limitation and mentions that selecting Open can cause the visual queries to fail.
Can anyone confirm:
- Is there a supported way to open or preview the deployed Data App inside the Fabric portal?
- If the Open button launches the app outside Fabric, what is the correct way to test the deployed app?
The semantic model is hosted on fabric capacity.
Any guidance or workaround would be helpful.
Thanks!

Hi Aparnaa_MS,
The fabricapps.net URL does not work for semantic model apps. Instead, click on the item in the Fabric workspace like any other Fabric item, and use it in the service.

Hi tayloramy
I am experiencing the same issue in both scenarios: when accessing the app through the fabricapps.net URL and when opening it directly as an item within the Fabric workspace. In both cases, the same message appears.
"Can’t open this app outside Fabric
Opening apps connected to semantic models outside of the Fabric portal is not supported at this time."Since the issue is not limited to the external app URL, I wanted to check whether there is any known workaround to resolve it.
Thanks.

Hi Aparnaa_MS,
When you click on the app in the workspace, instead of clicking the "open" button, click the "view app" button at the top right:

Thank you for the reply, The access issue was caused by an isolation-related restriction that was blocking connectivity. Once the isolation issue was resolved, access worked as expected.
Thank you
