The ideal Fabric learning path
Hi Fabric community! 👋
I'm looking for advice on the best learning path into Microsoft Fabric, and I'd love to hear from people who've been through it.
**My background:**
I'm a data consultant who has just started transitioning into data engineering. I have some coding experience (Python, SQL), I'm currently reading *Fundamentals of Data Engineering* by Joe Reis & Matt Housley, and I've just started working on my first real Fabric project (a Medallion architecture migration). So I'm learning on the job, which is exciting but also means I need to be deliberate about how I study.
**What I'm looking for:**
I came across **DP-700T00-A** (Implement a Lakehouse in Microsoft Fabric) but it's listed as intermediate — I'm worried it might assume too much prior knowledge and I'd end up lost or just memorising Fabric-specific steps without understanding the *why* behind them.
What I'd really love is a path that:
- ✅ **Starts from the basics** — assumes I'm new to the DE world, not just new to Fabric
- ✅ **Teaches fundamentals alongside the tool** — so I understand concepts like data modelling, ingestion patterns, lakehouse vs warehouse, Delta Lake, etc., not just "click here in Fabric"
- ✅ **Makes me tool-agnostic in the long run** — I don't want to be someone who only knows Fabric. I want the fundamentals to transfer to Databricks, Snowflake, or whatever comes next
- ✅ **Is ideally free or low cost** — Microsoft Learn, YouTube, open content, etc.
**My specific questions:**
1. Is there a recommended sequence on Microsoft Learn before tackling DP-700? Or is DP-700 actually approachable for someone at my level?
2. Are there any free resources (courses, YouTube channels, blogs) you'd pair with the Fabric-specific content to build solid DE fundamentals?
3. Any books, beyond the one I'm already reading, that you'd consider essential for a DE beginner?
Thanks in advance — really appreciate any guidance from people who've walked this path! 🙏
Hi robertozsr
The DP700 course you mentioned in your post assumes you already know the very basics. If you are keen to start from the foundation, it is best you look at courses below.
Training for Data Engineers | Microsoft Learn
This course takes you through the foundational concepts in Data Engineering, Data Analytics and Warehousing.
Data Engineering: Online Courses, Training and Tutorials | LinkedIn Learning
You can also look at LinkedIn Learning courses, some of which are free - the above link will give you a list of beginner courses.
Another option for you would be to look at the Azure Fundamentals course, which is primarily a beginner friendly course for Data Engineers on Microsoft Learn.
Course DP-900T00-A: Introduction to Microsoft Azure Data - Training | Microsoft Learn
There are some YouTube channels that are worth subscribing to - these have videos from Beginner to Intermediate
Guy in a Cube - YouTube (there is a Getting Started playlist on Microsoft Fabric on this channel)You can find the following two books useful in your learning journey:Fundamentals of Data Engineering - Joseph AchakjiDesigning Data Intensive Applications - Martin KleppmannI wish you the very best of luck in learning!

Hi robertozsr ,
The materials listed above are a really good start. In addition you might want to consider Aleksi Partanen you tube video on DP700 content. They are detailed enough and explains each concept with examples if you are a beginner is Fabric and Data Engineering Environment as well.
If you find this post useful give it a Kudo and if helped please accept as Solution
Thanks
