Problem with setting up link to Fabric in Dataverse
Hi Johan_DS,
Thanks for sharing the details. According to Microsoft documentation, Link to Fabric requires the Dataverse System Administrator role, Power BI workspace administrator permissions, and a qualifying Fabric capacity in the same Azure geography as the Dataverse environment. Please verify the F2 capacity's region and confirm that the target workspace is assigned to it. Also, check the documented Fabric workspace network security requirements.

Hello v-saisrao-msft ,
Thanks for your response. Do you also know where you can check the Azure geography of the Dataverse environement? Because currently it says 2 things at 2 different locations (see screenshots initial postst).
I have the Dataverse System Administrator role and also the workspace on the Fabric F2 capacity. I am an admin on this workspace. Do I still need a Power BI license even though I have access to a Fabric workspace?
Thanks in advance.

Hi
Regarding regions on Dataverse you can check them here:
These are what they call Macro regions:
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-platform/admin/macro-regions#macro-region-geography
To find out with more detail which region you need you can try either look at your Dataverse URL for the number and then check against this table:
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-platform/admin/new-datacenter-regions
There's also this other way I found in the forum seems kind of hacky but it should work as well:
Fabric Dataverse Link - You need Power BI premium license to continue | Microsoft Fabric CommunityRegarding the license of the account that sets up the link, I believe it needs to have at least a PRO license due to the requirement of being an Admin in the workspace.

Hi Johan_DS,
There are two separate things here that I would check.
First, I would not treat North Europe versus West Europe as an automatic blocker.
Microsoft changed the Link to Fabric validation so that it now checks the Azure geography rather than requiring the exact same datacenter region.
Both North Europe and West Europe fall within the Europe geography, so an F2 capacity in one and Dataverse in the other can still satisfy the documented geography requirement.
Microsoft explains this in the Link to Fabric troubleshooting guidance.
The Power Platform portal can also show both the macro geography and the underlying datacenter region, which is why you can sometimes see different labels in different screens. Microsoft documents that distinction in the Power Platform macro-region guidance.
Second, regarding the licensing message:
You should not need PPU specifically just because you are setting up Link to Fabric.
Microsoft’s current prerequisites require either:
Power BI Premium capacityor
Fabric capacity in the same Azure geographyand the troubleshooting documentation explicitly says Premium Per User is not sufficient as the required capacity.
Since you already have an F2 capacity, I would verify these points before buying anything else:
- the target workspace is actually assigned to that F2 capacity
- you are Admin of that workspace
- the F2 capacity is in the same Azure geography as the Dataverse environment
- you have permission to manage Fabric connections
- Users can create Fabric items is enabled
- Create workspaces is enabled if the wizard needs to create one
- OneLake external access is enabled
- the target workspace allows inbound connections from all networks
The current prerequisites are documented in the Link to Microsoft Fabric guidance. One additional limitation worth checking is workspace networking. Microsoft currently says Link to Fabric cannot use a workspace restricted to selected inbound networks or workspace-level private links.
So if all of the above is correct and the wizard still reports that it cannot find a Premium/Fabric capacity, I would capture the Dataverse environment ID, F2 capacity region, workspace ID and the validation error and raise it with Microsoft Support rather than purchasing another capacity immediately.
Based on the documentation, North Europe versus West Europe by itself should not require you to move the F2 capacity if they are both resolving to the same supported Azure geography.
