Microsoft Fabric vs. Databricks vs. Snowflake: Choosing the Right Data Platform

Microsoft Fabric vs. Databricks vs. Snowflake: The Enterprise Data Platform Decision

Three Powerful Platforms. Three Architectural Philosophies. One Critical Decision for Enterprise Technology Leaders.

The enterprise data landscape is undergoing one of its most significant transformations in decades.

For years, organizations invested heavily in traditional data warehouses, data lakes, ETL platforms, business intelligence tools, and increasingly complex integration architectures.

How to choose right platform?

    Hi dhanojbo,

In my experience the choice is rarely decided by feature lists, since all three can now do lakehouse storage, SQL, Spark/Python and BI integration. It is decided by your people, existing estate and operating model. A few questions that usually settle it:

    Question Leans towards
    ----------------------------------------- -------------------------------------
Are most consumers Power BI / M365 users? Fabric (one capacity, OneLake, Direct Lake)
Is the team mainly data engineers / ML Databricks (Spark-first, notebooks,
engineers writing code? MLflow, fine-grained cluster control)
Is the team mainly SQL analysts and you Snowflake (SQL-first, very low ops,
want minimal platform management? strong data sharing)
Multi-cloud is a hard requirement? Databricks or Snowflake
Cost model you can govern best? Fabric: fixed capacity (F-SKU)
                                                 Databricks/Snowflake: per-use compute
    Open table format interoperability needed?  All support Delta/Iceberg to a degree;
check shortcuts / mirroring / UniForm

    Two practical tips before deciding:

    1. Run a 2-4 week proof of concept with one real workload on each shortlisted platform (same data, same pipeline, same report) and measure developer time, cost per run and query latency. Vendor benchmarks rarely reflect your data.

    2. Remember it does not have to be exclusive. Fabric can mirror Snowflake and Databricks Unity Catalog data into OneLake, so a common pattern is engineering in Databricks/Snowflake and serving/BI in Fabric. Decide where the source of truth lives and keep the others as consumers.

So my overall approach would be:

Map users + skills + existing cloud/M365 estate
-> Shortlist 2 platforms with the questions above
-> PoC one real workload on each, measure time/cost/latency
-> Pick a source of truth; integrate the rest via mirroring/shortcuts

  • Hi dhanojbo

Choosing the right platform depends on what your requirements are. This is the Fabric community, so clearly there will be a bias towards Fabric here.

SOme of the questions I would ask are:
What does reporting look like for you, what tools are in use/planned? If you're using Power BI, Fabric is a natural choice as Fabric and Power BI are the same platform.

The skills of your data team also comes into account. Do you have a team that is comfortable with writing SQL and Python? Or do you need some no/low code tools to ingest and transform data? Fabric has both.

The last thing to consider is cost and licensing. Is your org already a Microsoft customer? Do you have enterprise licensing? If you already have E5 licensning, that would give everyone in your org power bi pro at no additional charge.
