Microsoft Fabric Pipeline Option Missing from New Item Menu Across Multiple Workspaces

Hi Fabric Community,

We are experiencing an issue in Microsoft Fabric where the Data Factory Pipeline option is missing from the new item menu.

When we open a workspace and click new item, searching for "Pipeline" returns no results. As a result, we are unable to create new Data Factory pipelines.

We have observed this issue across multiple workspaces, including Fabric trial and capacity-based workspaces.

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Open the Microsoft Fabric portal.
  2. Navigate to the affected workspace.
  3. Click New item.
  4. Search for "Pipeline".
  5. Observe that no results are displayed.

Expected Result:
The Data Factory Pipeline option should be available in the New item menu.

Actual Result:
The Pipeline option is missing, and the search returns "Unable to find any search results."

Business Impact:
This issue is blocking our data engineering activities and delaying ongoing ETL/ELT development.

Troubleshooting Performed:

  • Tested the New item menu across multiple workspaces.
  • Checked both trial and capacity-based workspaces.
  • Confirmed that the Pipeline option remains unavailable.

Questions:

  1. Is anyone else experiencing this issue in Microsoft Fabric?
  2. Could this be related to a recent service update or a tenant-level setting?
  3. Are there any known workarounds or recommended troubleshooting steps?

Any suggestions or guidance from the community would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

  • Hi kanchila98

Can you confirm that the tenant setting for "allow users to create Fabric items" is enabled in the tenant portal? If it is restricted to a security group, can you confirm that you are in that group?

    Hi kanchila98,

Since it happens across several workspaces and both trial and paid capacities, I would look at tenant-level controls before anything workspace-specific. Pipelines disappearing from New item for everyone usually comes down to one of these:

    1. Item-creation policy restricting item types
Admin portal > Tenant settings > "Users can create Fabric items"
-> if set to the advanced / per-item-type mode, check whether Pipeline
(Data Factory) is excluded for your users or security groups

    2. Capacity-level delegated override
Admin portal > Capacity settings > <capacity> > Delegated tenant settings
-> "Users can create Fabric items" overridden to Disabled for that capacity

    3. Workload/experience switched off
-> other Data Factory items (Copy job, Dataflow Gen2) also missing?
then it is the whole Data Factory experience, not just pipelines

    4. Naming/search change
-> browse the New item list by category (Get data / Data Factory)
instead of searching, in case the search index is stale

A quick way to tell user vs tenant: ask a Fabric admin to try New item > Pipeline in the same workspace. If the admin can see it and you cannot, it is a policy scoped to users/groups (point 1). If nobody can, it is tenant/capacity wide or a service issue, and the Fabric support status page / a support ticket is the next step.

In the meantime, the REST API is a useful workaround and also a good diagnostic: if creation is blocked by policy, the error message will say so.

    POST https://api.fabric.microsoft.com/v1/workspaces/{workspaceId}/dataPipelines
    { "displayName": "pl_test_create" }

So my overall approach would be:

Admin vs user test in the same workspace
-> Check item-creation policy (per item type) and its groups
    -> Check capacity delegated overrides
-> Try REST create to read the exact blocking reason
-> Nobody can create: service issue -> support ticket
