Hi everyone, how are you?

I want to study more to pass data engineering certifications. Besides Microsoft Fabric, what do you recommend for a Data Engineer?

  • HI MXTP ,

Apart from MS Fabric, you can learn MS Azure, this will give you basic understanding of Cloud and Data Fundamentals and then go ahead with Data Engineering concepts. For eg: you can give AZ900 - Azure Fundamentals, DP-900, Azure Data Fundamentals and then DP203- Data Engineering certifications to gain more confidence. Also, learn SQL or Pyspark to gain coding knowledge.  After this, you can get an idea on how Pwer BI reporting and dashboards work on the engineered data by doing some Power BI Certifications.

DP600 also covers Power Bi concepts.

Let me know if this information is helpful.

    Thanks

  • Hi MXTP,

I’d be a bit careful with DP-203, because that exam was retired on March 31, 2025. The current Microsoft data engineering certification path is DP-700: Microsoft Certified Fabric Data Engineer Associate.

    DP-700:

    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/credentials/certifications/fabric-data-engineer-associate/

    DP-203 retired notice:

    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/credentials/certifications/resources/study-guides/dp-203

    A good path could be:

    AZ-900 → Cloud fundamentals

    DP-900 → Data fundamentals

    DP-700 → Fabric Data Engineering

Beyond certifications, I’d focus on the core Data Engineering skills:

    - SQL

    - Python / PySpark

    - Lakehouse and medallion architecture

    - Data pipelines and orchestration

    - Batch and streaming ingestion

    - Data quality and monitoring

    - Git / CI-CD basics

    - Security and governance

I’d also recommend building small end-to-end projects, for example:

    Source data → pipeline → bronze/silver/gold lakehouse → warehouse/semantic model → Power BI report

That practical experience will help much more than certifications alone.

  • It depends on what your focus areas are. Do you want to focus more on Data Engineering in Fabric or a specific area elsewhere like working with Spark compute or AI?
