DP700 - Failed first attempt. MS practice exam not close to being representative of the complexity

hey fionalindberrg I actually had a similar experience, found it really difficult to pass D-700 (luckily I barely pass with just slightly over 700 points).

I feel that he Microsoft practice assessment (while useful to get started) the real exam tends to be much more complex. Coming to the exam, you should expect more scenario-based questions where several answers may appear reasonable and you need to select the best implementation. The exam also heavily tests "practical hands on" Fabric Data Engineering skills rather than just theory.
I saw significantly more questions around KQL / Eventhouse / Real-Time Intelligence (which surprised me) then PySpark DataFrames, notebooks, pipelines / orchestration and data security / authentication patterns.

As such, with the spirit of being "hands-on", I would recommend these other options to study:

• MeasureUp - this is still the closest to Microsoft exam style that I've found, not free though so try getting paid by your company (if possible)

Please don't get discouraged. The fact that you are certified in PL 300 and DP 600 is a great thing. 

Im by no means marketing anything but I followed Phillip Burton's course and some practice tests on Udemy. I agree that the MS practice exam are not similar to the actual exam. So please check other options.

I would highly recommend making sure that you have got hands on experience as that can often help you with regards to the questions to understand what they are actually asking when you have the experience required.

Hey, sorry to hear that — that gap between practice scores and actual result is genuinely frustrating, especially when DP600 tracked so well for you.

You're definitely not alone on this one. A lot of people say DP700's official practice test feels noticeably less representative than DP600's — it leans multiple choice/recall, while the real exam pushes way more into hands-on notebook code, PySpark/Spark SQL syntax, and yes, notebookutils and secret scopes/mssparkutils-style stuff that barely shows up in the practice questions. So it's not just you — the exam samples real hands-on skill more than the prep material does.

For better prep:

• Just build stuff. Spin up notebooks in a trial Fabric workspace and actually write the code — reading secrets from Key Vault via notebookutils.credentials, mounting/reading from lakehouses, Spark SQL vs PySpark for the same transform, etc. Muscle memory beats memorizing.
  • MS Learn's DP-700 learning path has sandbox exercises — actually do them, don't just skim.
  • Look up John Savill's DP-700 study videos on YouTube — solid at bridging the "exam trivia" vs "real skill" gap.
  • KQL: practice directly in the Kusto query playground, not just theory.

    Good sign you're already zeroing in on notebookutils as a gap — that's exactly the kind of thing that trips people up. A few months of actually building things in a Fabric trial workspace should close it. Good luck on the retake!
