Copilot not working in notebooks

Hi, I'm finding that Copilot doesn't work for me in notebooks (Chat sidebar or at the top of cells), but works in other parts of the platform (e.g. in pipelines) and even for the Copilot completions suggestions in notebooks work. I'm on a paid Fabric capacity with the three tenant settings for using Azure Open AI service, storing and processing outside the geographic region switched on. Notebooks are on Fabric runtime version 1.3, the workspace default, with no custom environment or anything installed.

Is this a known issue in notebooks at the moment or is there a setting I'm missing? Any question asked from the notebook chat just comes back with the same message "Something went wrong. Check your request and try again. If the issue continues, contact support."

    • Copilot in notebooks (chat pane/top cell chat) is a separate preview experience from the inline code suggestions you see as you type, so the fact suggestions work but chat fails is consistent with known behavior/limitations.

    • Copilot conversational features in notebooks require certain tenant and workspace settings to be enabled, especially the “Data sent to Azure OpenAI can be processed outside your capacity’s geographic region” setting in the Fabric admin portal if your workspace isn’t in a supported Azure OpenAI region.

    • If that setting is not applied or hasn’t propagated, the chat pane will repeatedly return “Something went wrong. Check your request…” even though other Copilot functionality appears to work.

    • Some tenant configurations (ex: private link) will disable the notebook Copilot chat experience entirely while leaving inline suggestions functional.

Thanks for getting back to me Vinodh. Tenant-level private link is disabled and the following three settings are enabled (and have been for a while), so I'm not sure that's the issue:

       - Users can use Copilot and other features powered by Azure OpenAI
       - Data sent to Azure OpenAI can be processed outside your capacity's geographic region, compliance boundary, or national cloud instance
       - Data sent to Azure OpenAI can be stored outside your capacity's geographic region, compliance boundary, or national cloud instance

As a separate point, if you have the Copilot that integrates with VSCode, you can get a agentic experience that will rewrite and amend your notebook code if you let it.  It'll use anything in the open folders as the context window which means you can feed it any usage specific context.

    Hi bosho,

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Fabric Forum Community, and special thanks to Vinodh247 and spencer_sa  for prompt and helpful responses.

If the issue still persists, I’d recommend raising a support ticket with Microsoft. The support team can look into the backend and provide more in-depth assistance tailored to your environment.

    Hi bosho,

Just checking, have you had a chance to open a support ticket, as suggested. If so, we'd love to hear the current status or any updates from that.

If the issue was resolved through the support ticket, it would be great if you could share the solution here as well. It could really help other community members find answers more quickly.

    Warm regards,
