If you haven’t already, check out Arun Ulag’s hero blog “Microsoft Build 2026: Building Agentic Apps with Microsoft Fabric and Microsoft Databases” for a complete look at all of our Microsoft Build announcements across our Fabric and database offerings.

Developers building on data platforms today work with an agent at every step - describing intent, reviewing generated code, and iterating. That workflow only delivers when the agent understands the platform. Generic AI assistants handle Python and SQL in the abstract, but they do not know which Fabric API to call for a Spark job, which token audience the Eventhouse endpoint expects, or how to lay out a medallion architecture the way an experienced Fabric engineer would.

Microsoft Fabric Skills close that gap, they are an open-source library of AI skills that teach GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf, and other compatible AI coding tools how to work with Fabric correctly.

The repository is public.

Understanding Fabric Skills

A Fabric Skill is a packaged set of instructions, API patterns, and best practices that an AI coding tool loads on demand. Each skill encodes the right APIs and CLIs for a Fabric workload, workload-specific authentication and token audiences, query patterns and schema conventions, and end-to-end recipes for scenarios like medallion architectures, migrations, and diagnostics.

Instead of hoping your Copilot guesses the right endpoint or invents a token audience, you give it determined, Microsoft-authored guidance.

Why it matters

Without Fabric Skills, an agent generates plausible-looking code that calls the wrong endpoint, misses authentication, or scaffolds an architecture that does not match how Fabric items work. The developer corrects the AI instead of moving faster with it.

With Fabric Skills:

  • Authored by Microsoft - Skills come from the Fabric workload teams. When an API changes, the skill changes with it.
  • Composable - Install the full plugin bundle, a focused plugin bundle like authoring or consumption, or a single skill.
  • Open -The repo is MIT-licensed. File issues, send pull requests, or layer your own organization-specific skills on top.

What’s included

Fabric Skills are packaged to support different stages of the development lifecycle. Continue for a breakdown of what each bundle includes and when to use it:

  • fabric-skills: Complete bundle — authoring, consumption, operations, migration, and end-to-end architecture.
  • fabric-authoring:Creating items via REST APIs, CLI automation, notebooks, T-SQL, KQL, Dataflows Gen2, Eventstreams, and semantic models.
  • fabric-consumption: Read-only exploration across Warehouses, Lakehouses, Power BI semantic models, Eventhouse/KQL, Eventstreams, and catalog search.
  • fabric-operations: Performance and health diagnostics, including warehouse query insights and slow-query investigation.

Try it

These prompts ship with the repository. Install the skills and paste one into your AI coding tool.

Build a medallion architecture from raw data

Taxi trip data is available at the public TLC site. Create a Fabric project that follows medallion architecture principles.
Download dimension and lookup tables and 2025 trip data into a Lakehouse, build clean dimensional tables,
union fact tables across months, create an aggregate reporting view in the SQL analytics endpoint,
and generate a Power BI semantic model with all measures. Before deploying, ask me which workspace to use.

The agent orchestrates ingestion through bronze, silver, gold, and a semantic model — end to end, from a single prompt.

Get started

GitHub Copilot CLI and Visual Studio Code

Install from the GitHub plugin marketplace:

/plugin install fabric-skills@copilot-plugins

Or install a focused bundle:

/plugin install fabric-authoring@copilot-plugins
/plugin install fabric-consumption@copilot-plugins
/plugin install fabric-operations@copilot-plugins

GitHub Copilot CLI plugin installation is the recommended path. For other AI coding tools, the repository ships root-level configuration files that load automatically when the repo is opened in your project.

Claude Code, Cursor, and Windsurf

Clone the repository into your project or add it as a submodule alongside your existing code and the tool picks up the Fabric guidance on its own:

git clone https://github.com/microsoft/skills-for-fabric.git
  • Claude Code loads CLAUDE.md and the included .mcp.json configuration.
  • Cursor loads .cursorrules.
  • Windsurf loads .windsurfrules.

Authentication

Most Fabric operations require Azure authentication:

az login
az account get-access-token --resource https://api.fabric.microsoft.com

The installed skills handle the workload-specific token audiences for SQL, Spark, Power BI, and KQL.

What’s next

This is the first public drop, and the library is growing fast. Upcoming additions include deeper coverage for Power BI, Data Science, and Real-Time Intelligence workloads, along with richer end-to-end recipes that span multiple workloads in a single prompt.

If there is a workload, scenario, or migration path you want covered, open an issue on the repository. Community skill contributions are welcome in the github/awesome-copilot repository.

    Hi,

I’m trying to create a report using Fabric Skills in a workspace where I’m an admin, using a semantic model hosted in a different workspace.

I have both Read and Build permissions on the semantic model, but I’m unable to create or edit the report unless I’m assigned the Contributor role in the semantic model’s workspace.

Is this expected behavior, or is there an additional permission or setting required to create and edit reports using a semantic model from another workspace?

    Thanks.

having skills is fine, but looks like MS has still not opened MCP endpoints for third party tools like claude, am I missing something? I tried connecting to fabric sql endpoint from claude , its able to connect successfully but fails to list any available tools, am i missing anything?
